Share a ride. That’s what Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone would like his employees to do as part of the 511NY Rideshare’s 2013 Carpool Challenge.

To take part in the challenge, employees agree to complete at least four round trips in a calendar month between Sept. 1 and Nov. 30 in which they get to and from work by means other than driving themselves alone. Petrone has already signed up.

“I want to help set an example,” Petrone said Friday. “Not everyone is going to do this all the time, but there are going to be people who look at each other and say ‘we can do this,’ and that will be more people participating than the day we started the program. Every little bit helps.”

He said he had a few options with whom to share a ride.

The board voted in August to make the town an official participant in the challenge. Participants can carpool, take public transportation, bicycle or walk. Those who complete the four round trips will receive a $25 Target gift card from 511NYRideshare, a program of the New York State Department of Transportation.

For those who are not town employees, there is an opportunity not to be left out in helping the environment. Everyone can participate in Car Free Day Long Island, which is Sept. 20.

Car Free Day is an international event celebrated every September during which people are encouraged to use alternate modes of transportation for one day. The town, through its HART Bus System, is a co-sponsor.

“Whether you’re an employee or not of the town, you affect the coming and going of traffic,” Petrone said. “If it’s one or two people, they’re making an impact.”

Persons can pledge to participate by filling out a pledge form at the Car Free Day LI website, carfreedayli.com. Those who pledge to be car-free or car-light will automatically be entered for a chance to win prizes.
