Huntington Town extends moratorium on wind turbines
The Huntington Town Board has voted unanimously to extend until December a moratorium on issuing permits regarding wind turbines.
The board voted in February to have a 128-day moratorium but since has decided it needs more time to figure out legislation that would regulate the alternative energy source.
“The departments are grappling with a lot and looking at a lot of options so they want to get a draft of an ordinance that makes sense that can then go out for circulation,” said councilman Mark Cuthbertson, who sponsored the resolution.
Since late last year Cuthbertson and other town officials have been working to draft town code on wind turbines. The effort began after photography giant Canon sought approval to build 11 wind turbines at its new North American headquarters in Melville.
The moratorium will give town officials time to craft regulations regarding zoning, use, location, size, height, noise and safety requirements. Currently, nothing in town code governs wind turbines.
Cuthbertson said they might not need until December to come up with a plan, but a later deadline makes sense.
“In lieu of having multiple extensions of a moratorium, we wanted to extend it to a realistic date and work to get it done and passed within that time frame,” he said
Cuthbertson said all applications are on hold pending passage of any legislation.
