Huntington Town to honor Marine of the Year
In honor of Veterans Day, the Town of Huntington invites the public to two events to remember those who have served in the U.S. military.
On Sunday at 9 a.m., the town’s annual Veterans Day Program and Wreath Ceremony will take place at Veterans Plaza, on the front lawn of Huntington Town Hall.
Town officials will honor William Ober, commandant of the Huntington detachment of the Marine Corps League, who was named 2013 Marine of the Year at the New York State Marine Corps League Convention.
The Long Island Children’s Choir will perform, and refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Carol Rocco, the town’s coordinator for veterans affairs, at 631-351-3012.
At 11 a.m., a bench dedication ceremony will take place in East Northport for retired Navy Lt. Cmdr. Francis J. Minnock, a 60-year East Northport resident. He is a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, having served in the military from 1940 to 1970. Minnock was at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
The ceremony will be held at John J. Walsh Memorial Park, Larkfield Road, one block north of Pulaski Road in East Northport. Recently, friends and neighbors of Minnock donated the bench to the town in Minnock’s honor.
