Islip helps fund downtown Ronkonkoma revamp
The heart of downtown Ronkonkoma is getting some cosmetic surgery.
The intersection of Ocean and Johnson avenues will receive a $100,000 upgrade via a project that will add trees, landscaping and signage to show visitors they’re in the Islip side of Ronkonkoma, said Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt.
“This is an intersection that needs some improvement,” she said. “The hamlet of Ronkonkoma really has no true identifying downtown on the Islip side. We decided it was time to do some beautification.”
Plans call for a carved wooden sign that identifies Ronkonkoma’s founding date, lanterns, and pavers in the sidewalks, she said.
The funding comes from Islip’s capital budget, which Weichbrodt said has funded similar projects for other villages and hamlets in the past.
She’s looking for state funding to continue the project throughout Ronkonkoma’s streets.
With the input of a group of Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Association members, the town is “in the design phase right now,” she said. “So that should be finished by perhaps the fall and we’ll start construction in the spring.”
“It will give the hamlet an identity,” she added.
