Islip Republican Committee designates candidates for November election
The Islip GOP made it official.
At the party’s convention Monday night, the Islip Republican Committee designated its candidates for the November elections.
Getting the nod in a series of unanimous votes were incumbent town board members Steven J. Flotteron and Trish Bergin Weichbrodt; incumbent Suffolk County Legislators Tom Barraga and Tom Cilmi; and political newcomer Anthony Musumeci, who is running for an open legislative seat in the county’s 8th District.
The candidates are expected to be confirmed at the Suffolk County Republican Committee convention next week.
Committee chairman Frank A. Tantone presided over the convention, which was attended by about 50 party members, including Supervisor Tom Croci, Councilman John C. Cochrane Jr., Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, Town Attorney Robert L. Cicale, Long Island MacArthur Airport Commissioner Robert Schaefer and planning board chairman John Schettino.
Flotteron vowed to “work my butt off like I’ve done for the last eight years.” Bergin Weichbrodt said she would continue to sell underutilized town-owned properties and said that by January 2014 she hopes the town will have added $10 million in property to the tax rolls.
Neither Flotteron nor Bergin Weichbrodt would pledge to not raise taxes again; the pair were part of the board that approved a 28 percent property tax hike last year.
They face Democratic candidates Dafny Irizarry, a schoolteacher from East Islip, and small-business owner Ken Mangan of Sayville.
