Islip to hold ‘Help After Sandy’ meeting
The Islip Town board will hold a “Help After Sandy” informational meeting Tuesday to bring residents together with agencies that can answer their questions as they try to return to normalcy after the superstorm wreaked havoc on the South Shore.
Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, New York State Office of Emergency Management, American Red Cross, and the New York State Department of Insurance as well as the town’s planning and building department commissioners, hazmat representatives and environmental control department commissioners will be available to answer questions and guide residents on getting help for their homes.
As people start to rebuild, Islip Planning Commissioner Dave Genaway said last week the planning department has created an emergency repair permit, which costs $50 and will require less documentation than usually would be needed.

“We know there is going to be a spike in building permits, and we know most of those are going to be emergency repairs,” Genaway said, adding that the permit can’t be used for new square footage or additions.
The town also will waive the filing fee for permit applications when residents want to rebuild a garage or a structure destroyed in the storm. He said the fee typically can be up to $500.
“We realize everyone is really hurting here and we didn’t want to create a process that was so onerous that no one would want to come in for building permits,” Genaway said.
The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall West, 401 Main St.
