Islip Town goes live Monday with a dedicated Web page designed as a one-stop information shop for services available to veterans.

A link to the page is available from the town’s homepage -- www.townofislip-ny.gov. From there, veterans will be able to access links to other agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, that provide support services.

Information will also be supplied about local employers seeking to hire veterans, subsidies available for housing and fuel, and support services such as drug and alcohol abuse counseling.

Councilman John Cochrane, one of three veterans on the town board along with Supervisor Tom Croci and councilman Anthony Senft, said Islip was the first town in Suffolk to pull together the dedicated site. The information was pooled together with the assistance of the town’s 18 veterans groups.

“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, but we want to make a one-stop shop for our veterans,” Cochrane said.

“So often veterans return home to a fanfare but within a week they’re forgotten as they go about trying to find jobs and put their lives back together,” Senft said. “We’re not going to let that happen in Islip.”

Croci said many businesses already have contacted the town seeking to hire veterans. “We hope that with time others will join with us and it will become a useful network of resources for veterans,” Croci said.
