'Justice for Trayvon' vigil set for today
The Nassau County chapter of the Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network civil rights organization will hold a vigil Saturday in honor of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen shot to death last year by George Zimmerman. The vigil is one of 100 “Justice for Trayvon” vigils being held nationwide.
The vigil will be held at noon at Nassau County District Court in Hempstead Village. About 1,000 people, including local clergy and elected officials, are expected to the only such event scheduled on Long Island, Nassau chapter president Annette Dennis said.
Sharpton, along with Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton and her surviving son Jahvaris Fulton, will be at another noon rally at 1 Police Plaza in Manhattan. Trayvon’s father Tracy Martin will join the network’s Florida chapter at the federal courthouse in Miami.
Organizers said this weekend’s vigils and rallies are intended to press for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman for the shooting death of Martin. The Justice Department is investigating whether Zimmerman violated Martin’s civil rights when he shot the 17-year-old during a February 2012 confrontation in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman said he fired his gun in self-defense.
A six-member jury acquitted Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges.
