Riverhead pet shelter offering $10 vaccinations

Kent Animal Shelter is enhancing its low-cost clinic this month with $10 vaccinations.

The shelter is offering distemper, rabies and parvo vaccines for dogs; and distemper, upper respiratory and rabies vaccines for cats.

Pam Green, executive director of the nonprofit Riverhead shelter, said the shelter regularly offers low-cost spay and neutering at the clinic. The vaccines are available because of a $10,000 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the shelter has pledged to vaccinate 1,000 animals.

She said the program is to help ease the financial burden on pet owners.

“When the economy is so tight, getting the animals their vaccinations may not be a priority if people are squeezing the budget,” Green said.

She said the shelter still has supplies for 300 animals. Vaccinations are being administered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 14, 15, 22, 28, and 29.

Green said the program could be extended into August if supplies last. They are also making another pledge next month: to spay or neuter 120 pit bulls or pit mixes for just $20 each. That program is sponsored by a grant from Petsmart Charities.

Appointments for both programs are required. They can be made by calling the clinic at 631-727-7797.
