Kings Park board OKs schools budget
The Kings Park board of education voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve an $82.9 million budget proposal for 2013-2014 that carries a tax increase that falls just below the district’s state tax cap.
The proposal’s 3.5 percent tax levy does not pierce the 3.63 percent maximum allowed.
“Our community is defined by this school district,” board member Charles Leo told the audience of nearly 50 people. “This is a responsible budget for the students and the community.”
The budget closed the $626,902 gap the district was facing by reducing 6.4 teaching positions in physical education, music, math, science, social studies, English language arts and art, while preserving instructional programs.
“This board together made the decision not to cut programs,” said board president Marie Goldstein, who also thanked people for offering input at previous budget workshops. “For our students, we would always like more, but we need your help to pass the budget.”
Residents will vote May 21 on the budget, along with a separate proposition to spend no more than $170,000 to buy a bus and a van, which would be financed over five years — an amount included in the budget.
