Kings Park civic group to discuss library renovation

The director of the Smithtown public library system will be the guest speaker at tonight’s Kings Park Civic Association meeting. The 7:30 p.m. meeting will be held at Kings Park High School at 200 Route 25A.

Robert Lusak will discuss the renovation of the library’s Kings Park branch, which is due to reopen soon. The branch is one of four in the Smithtown Special Library District. Three branches have been expanded, and the Nesconset branch was relocated, as part of a $21 million capital improvement project approved by voters in March 2008. The Nesconset and Commack branches were reopened last year.

The civic association also will discuss the planned demolition of buildings at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center and a proposed zoning change in the area known as the Kings Park industrial park.

Property owners in the industrial park have proposed a zoning change that would allow about 100 acres of existing heavy industry to operate legally under the town zoning code. The area also is being considered by a Maryland firm proposing to build a power plant.
