Latest airport report cites rise in business

Takeoffs and landings at Republic Airport for the final two months of 2011 were up from the same period in 2010, signaling a modest uptick in airport business.

The latest operations report from the airport showed an increase over the fiscal year to date as well, to 137,646 total operations by the end of December, from 118,205.

Recreational pilots accounted for much of the increase. Jet traffic was down.

“We’re still not up to where we were before the recession hit and gas prices went up, but we’re above where we were,” airport manager Mike Geiger said. In 2009, he said, only 100,000 takeoffs and landings were performed at Republic over the entire year.

Geiger announced the numbers at Tuesday night’s Republic Airport Commission meeting. Results of the ongoing “vision plan” — drawing on input from airport neighbors, pilots and businesses, and covering everything from airport infrastructure and aviation logistics to attracting new services — should be released in the spring, he said.
