Legal clinic offered for Nassau small businesses affected by Sandy
The Nassau Business Recovery Task Force and the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University have joined to establish a clinic to offer free legal assistance to small businesses recovering from the effects of superstorm Sandy, according to an announcement by Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano.
“There is a cascade of legal issues ... in the wake of the Hurricane that are affecting small businesses,” he said in a news release, adding he hopes the clinic can help those businesses unable to pay for such services.
Through this faculty-supervised learning program, second- and third-year law students primarily will offer transactional legal assistance, such as drafting and negotiating contracts, and on a wide range of issues that have arisen, such as those related to leases and renovations.
“We want to help Nassau’s small businesses impacted by the storm,” said Michael Haber, a visiting clinical professor of law at Hofstra and the clinic’s instructor.
The clinic opened its doors Friday and initially will be staffed by six students, who will attend a weekly seminar taught by Haber in addition to doing hands-on legal work. Under the program, staffers at the Nassau Business Recovery Task Force, along with professional volunteers from banks and accounting firms, will sort through requests for assistance and send potential cases to the Hofstra Law clinic. Additionally, small businesses interested in these services, including nonprofits and community groups, can apply directly for the free legal assistance.
Small businesses interested in these services, including nonprofits and community groups, should contact Kathleen Conti at 516-463-5934 or at Kathleen.A.Conti@hofstra.edu for further information.
