LI pol Dean Murray's Super Bowl bet helps veterans
Assemb. Dean Murray, above, is punting on a chance to get a free lobster dinner in favor of a score for veterans.
Murray (R-East Patchogue) won a wager with Massachusetts Rep. Steven S. Howitt (R-Seekonk) about Super Bowl XLVI. The terms were simple: If the New York Giants won, Howitt would send Murray a lobster dinner and New England clam chowder. If the New England Patriots won, Murray would send Howitt a buffet of local New York foods, including Manhattan clam chowder, bagels, New York-style pizza and Blue Point oysters.
The Giants triumphed, 21-17, but the two legislators cut a new deal: Instead of sending Murray food, Howitt would donate money to The Vets Place, a Yaphank shelter for war veterans.
“I think it’s more important that we recognize our real heroes,” Murray said. “This is a way we can do that.”
Howitt, reached by telephone on Beacon Hill, said he will probably donate about $50, the limit the two legislators had on their original wager.
Murray said he reached out to Howitt for the bet because both are Republicans and both serve on tourism committees.
Howitt said he was still smarting from the Patriots’ loss, but the charity donation seemed like the right thing to do.
“I was looking forward to New York bagels and pizza,” he said.
