Lindenhurst school district proposes cutting six positions

The Lindenhurst school district is proposing eliminating several instructional and noninstructional positions as part of cost-savings in its 2012-13 budget.

District officials announced at Monday night’s budget workshop they were proposing eliminating 6.3 instructional positions: four from elementary schools, one from the middle school and 1.3 positions from the high school. Two noninstructional positions — nurses — also would be eliminated, said Superintendent Richard Nathan.

The cuts at the elementary level would come through reducing numbers of class sections, Nathan said. Albany Avenue and Daniel Street schools would lose two positions each, while Rall would lose one. The plan calls for an elementary math specialist to be added.
In the middle school, one sixth-grade position would be eliminated. Cuts in the high school would come from English, practical arts, social studies and science. Foreign languages and physical education would have increases in positions.

One nurse had been supplied to Our Lady of Perpetual Help school, which is closing, while another was kept on after Bower elementary closed.

The cuts are “Phase I” and are based on declining enrollment and smaller classes, Nathan said. “Phase II” would involve eliminating another 12 positions, some for programs that would be cut, such as high school dance, JROTC and the Alternative Learning Center program.

Nathan said the instructional cuts in Phase I would save the district $600,000 and the nurses another $100,000. Phase II cuts would save another $1.2 million, he said.

Officials said they are focused on Phase I, which Nathan said includes a tax levy increase less than the state-mandated tax cap. He has said the district’s levy increase can be up to 3.57 percent and not pierce the cap.

The district eliminated 50 teaching positions in the last two years, Nathan said.

Rose Russo, head of the Teachers' Association of Lindenhurst, said after the meeting that the nearly seven positions eliminated in Phase I “is seven too many” but that due to declining enrollment “we really can’t fight them.”
