Long Beach reduces speed limit on two main stretches
The Long Beach City Council reduced the citywide speed limit to 30 mph in a unanimous vote Tuesday night.
The city previously allowed speed up to 35 mph on sections of two of its main thoroughfares, Long Beach Boulevard and East Park Avenue.
The speed limit reduction does not apply to streets where the limit is already less than 30 mph, city officials said.
City officials said they hoped the reduced speed limit would help curb speeding.
“It’s an important initiative to improve public safety,” City Manager Jack Schnirman said.
Also Tuesday, the city adopted the state’s Complete Streets program, which will open up new avenues for state and federal funding for road, pedestrian and cycling projects. Fifty-seven other New York municipalities and counties have signed on to the program.
