MTA CHIEF ADDRESSES MEDIA. Addressing the media after talks with LIRR unions broke down earlier today, MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast said the unions' contract counteroffer last week offered "no savings" to the MTA's offer and that there was a clear "gulf" in the negotiations.
The unions said their members will strike at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, and a wind down of service will begin “perhaps as early as Wednesday, as the railroad needs to secure its equipment.”
At the press conference Monday, Prendergast said accepting the unions' terms would "put pressure on fare increases" over the long-term. He said no new meeting is scheduled, but that he is willing to meet.
