The Islip Town Board has appointed the commissioner of Long Island MacArthur Airport to serve on the town’s Foreign Trade Zone Authority board.

Airport commissioner Robert Schaefer was appointed to serve as vice president and secretary of the authority’s board by a unanimous town board vote Wednesday.

The appointment of Schaefer is customary, town officials said. All previous airport commissioners have served on the authority’s board. Schaefer receives no salary or stipend for the position.

The 52-acre trade zone, which is adjacent to the airport, sits on town-owned land and is run by the town under a contract with Suffolk County. U.S.-based companies in it can defer, reduce or eliminate customs duties on products they bring in from overseas, and the town also extends property-tax breaks to businesses based there.

Town Supervisor Tom Croci serves as chairman of the eight-member board. The current president is Tracey Krut.
