Mather Hospital expansion fund OKd
The Brookhaven Local Development Corp. has approved financing for a planned 28,400-square-foot expansion at John T. Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson.
The LDC on Monday approved $24 million in tax-exempt bonds for the project, which is expected to add a third story with 35 private rooms.
The project, the hospital’s first major expansion in more than a decade, is expected to add 111 permanent jobs.
The project also would include a 3,600-square-foot expansion on the hospital’s existing two floors for office and administration space, equipment purchases, and improvements to the hospital’s heating, cooling and information technology systems.
In a statement, Town Supervisor Edward P. Romaine said the expansion “will truly help save significant dollars for the hospital while at the same time improving health care for our community and creating new jobs.”
The project includes converting many double-bed rooms to single beds, which is expected to reduce infection rates and medical errors.
Single-bed rooms are “no longer a luxury but the standard for hospitals across the nation,” Mather senior vice president Joseph Wisnoski said.
