Meeting to discuss Kennedy Airport's runway usage
The Town-Village Aircraft Safety Noise Abatement Committee will host a meeting Monday to discuss the impact of runway usage on communities surrounding Kennedy Airport.
The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. at East Williston Village Hall, 2 Prospect St.
Representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration will address concerns about the number of flights that use Runway 22L, which requires planes to fly over Garden City, Stewart Manor, Floral Park and other nearby communities.
Members of the 40-year-old coalition have called for equitable distribution of flights onto the airport’s eight runway approaches, a ban on low-flying planes and a reduction of late-night flights as a way to reduce aircraft noise.
Communities participating in the committee include Atlantic Beach, Cedarhurst, East Williston, Floral Park, Garden City, Hewlett Harbor, Inwood, Lawrence, Long Beach, Malverne, New Hyde Park, Stewart Manor, Valley Stream, and Woodsburgh.
FAA officials have said runway usage is determined by many factors, including wind direction, weather conditions, construction projects and noise abatement procedures.
