The Rockville Centre Police Department is reaching out to residents interested in joining its Neighborhood Watch Program.

The department has scheduled an informational meeting at Village Hall for Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. during which police plan to explain the program to residents.

The program helps neighbors become “extra eyes and ears for the police in order to help prevent and reduce crime,” police said in a statement.

“Community involvement is an important asset for the police,” Rockville Centre Police Commissioner Chuck Gennario said in a statement. “Neighborhood Watch strengthens neighborhood spirit and builds partnerships between the police and the community.”

The Sept. 10 meeting will be used to identify residents interested in becoming “block captains” in the program, police said.

Neighborhood residents do not perform patrols, Gennario said.

Village Hall is located at 1 College Place.
