Montauk Highway in Southampton, East Hampton, to get repaved
The New York State Department of Transportation on Thursday will start repaving 8.2 miles of State Route 27, also known as Montauk Highway, in Southampton and East Hampton.
The construction, which will cost a total of $7.6 million, is to take place between County Road 39 and Stephen Hands Path.
The project will remove the top layer of pavement and replace it with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings to include bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks.
To minimize the impact on residents, businesses and motorists, travel lanes will be shifted rather than closed on shorter sections of Route 27, transportation officials said in a news release. In addition, construction will only take place during off-peak hours and will be suspended between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Construction is expected to move from east to west but may switch depending on conditions, officials said.
Travel lane shifts will be in effect Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. starting Thursday and between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. starting April 1. On-street parking will be prohibited during construction.
