N. Hempstead waterfront advisory panel has changes
The Town of North Hempstead reconstituted its waterfront advisory commission at its board meeting Tuesday night, drawing the 11 members from environmentalists and representatives of not-for-profits, maritime businesses and yachting clubs.
The town board also voted to slightly change the commission’s bylaws, creating four two-year terms and four one-year terms, in addition to three three-year terms for the initial appointments. Terms will resume at three years for subsequent appointments.
The commission was created in 1995 and issues nonbinding advisory opinions to the town board on waterfront issues, such as mooring permits and requests to build docks.
Councilwoman Dina DeGiorgio, a nonvoting member of the commission, said the changes to the commission were made after months had gone by with several of the members not attending meetings, and at times not reaching the required number for a quorum.
“It was obvious in January we had to re-evaluate who wanted to come or who was not interested anymore,” she said.
Ronald Fink and Jennifer Wilson-Pines, both of Port Washington, and Steve Wachter of Bayville were appointed to three-year terms, while Barbara Scheid of Port Washington, John Thompson of Atlantic Outfitters in Port Washington, Matt Meyran of Meyran Marine Service Inc. and Port Washington Water Taxi in Port Washington, and Chris Gasiorek of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point were appointed to two-year terms. Guy LaMotta of Manhasset Bay Marina, and William Cornachio, Ken Weigand and Victor Sostar, all of Manhasset, were appointed to one-year terms.
DeGiorgio said she hopes the commission will expand its duties to include promoting waterfront activities.
The next commission meeting is scheduled for June 18.
