The Village of New Hyde Park board authorized itself to pierce the state’s 2 percent cap on property taxes during a public meeting Tuesday evening.

Robert Lofaro, the deputy mayor who is running to replace the retiring mayor, Daniel Petruccio, explained the vote was precautionary.

“It does not mean we will exceed the 2 percent tax cap, it just gives us the authority to do so if necessary,” he said.

The village held the first of several scheduled budget meetings Tuesday night. A final vote is scheduled for April 2, village officials said.
