New law facilitates cutting speed limits
State Assemb. Harvey Weisenberg (D-Long Beach) announced Monday that Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has signed a law Weisenberg sponsored that gives the city of Long Beach and the Town of Hempstead the ability to reduce speed limits on certain residential streets to less than 30 miles per hour.
“There have been many tragic accidents on the many streets in Long Beach and Lido Beach in recent years,” Weisenberg said in a statement. “This long overdue law will allow these communities to finally set appropriate speed limits on many residential streets.”
Three Democrats on the five-member City Council -- president Len Torres, vice president Scott Mandel and Fran Adelson -- praised Weisenberg and the new law.
“The aim of this bill is to make Long Beach a safer place, and we are so appreciative of the work that Assemblyman Weisenberg has done on behalf of the residents of Long Beach,” Adelson said.
Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said the town “appreciates the law and thanks the Assemblyman. We look forward to working with our neighbors in Lido Beach to bring about any speed reduction they may desire.”
The town and the city now can conduct a study of the safety conditions on the following residential roads and pass a local law to set appropriate speed limits for them:
In Long Beach: Cleveland Avenue, Harding Avenue, Mitchell Avenue, Belmont Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Coolidge Avenue, Wilson Avenue and Taft Avenue; in Lido Beach: Ocean Boulevard, Allevard Street, Bath Street, Buxton Street, Cheltenham Street, Pinehurst Street, Harrogate Street, Matlock Street, Nantwick Street, Biarritz Street, Royat Street, Luchon Street, Woodhail Street, Leamington Street, Saratoga Street, Kensington Street and Prescott Street.
