North Haven Village mayor abruptly resigns

North Haven Village’s mayor resigned this week for unspecified personal reasons, after serving five terms as mayor.

Laura Nolan’s announcement was made by village trustees at Tuesday’s board meeting, said trustee Jeff Sander. It was effective immediately.

Sander said Nolan had been having discussions for about a week with board members.

“She was contemplating the move,” he said, declining to be more specific as to her reasons. She was not at Tuesday’s meeting.

Nolan, 55, did not return calls for comment.

Nolan had been mayor of North Haven, a small spit of land near Sag Harbor, since 2002.

Deputy Mayor Jim Smyth will fill her position until the end of June, when the village will hold elections for two seats.

Sander said the board will then appoint a mayor to serve until June 2014, when Nolan’s existing term is up.
