North Hempstead celebrates Black History Month
The Town of North Hempstead will host the second annual Black History Month Presentation on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Westbury High School. The event will feature performances on African-American experiences, music and dance.
Westbury High School students will participate in the presentation, telling stories of African-American figures who played a large role in the North Hempstead community. The event will celebrate the diversity and contributions of African-American history-makers in North Hempstead.
“Plans are to continue celebrating North Hempstead’s cultural diversity through festivals and presentations showcasing the myriad ethnic traditions in our midst,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said in a statement.
The town has annual festivals celebrating Greek, Italian and Asian cultures, among others.
The Sanaa Movement, a liturgical dance group in Westbury, and the Westbury Middle School Drum Bucket will also perform.
Town board member Viviana Russell said the town has “a rich history filled with prominent figures of African descent.”
Russell became the first African-American female town board member when she was elected in 2009.
The Black History Month presentation is open to the public. For more information, visit northhempsteadny.gov or call 311.
