North Hills Village looks to reduce LIRR shuttle service established last year
North Hills Village trustees voted last week to explore reducing the village’s free morning shuttle service it established last year for the village’s commuters.
The board voted unanimously to end the shuttle’s 9:30 a.m. run from Village Hall to the Manhasset Long Island Rail Road station if it can renegotiate the contract between the village and the shuttle operator, Long Island Limousines.
The service, which is only available to village residents, began in July with pickups from Village Hall and Christopher Morley Park, but has not attracted large numbers of riders as the village had hoped. The village already has stopped service from the park. Deputy Mayor Dennis Sgambati said the village spends about $13,000 a month on the service, which has averaged about 460 riders per month.
“I don’t know if this will ever be cost-effective,” Mayor Marvin Natiss said, adding that he was still committed to the shuttle. “We’re proud of that service we provide and we’re just going to have to keep providing it.”
