Northport-East Northport school board adopts budget; positions cut
The Northport-East Northport board of education adopted a 2013-14 budget that does not pierce the state tax levy cap, trims 18 full-time-equivalent positions and adds to current district programs, officials say.
Superintendent Marylou McDermott said the $156,596,051 adopted budget includes more than $100,000 in security upgrades and funding for additional math and English labs at the high school. She said the loss of jobs is necessary because of declining enrollment. Officials say enrollment is expected to drop by 251 students — from 6,084 this year to 5,833.
McDermott said about half of the staffers who would be cut are expected to return next year as leave replacements or to fill part-time positions.

The adopted spending plan, a 1.72 percent increase from this year, includes a 1.98 percent increase in the tax levy, below the district’s 3.43 percent allowable levy limit, officials said.
“We are very pleased with the budget because we have maintained and enhanced our programs and updated our facilities,” McDermott said.
Residents will vote on the budget on May 21.
