Northport, Local 342 agree on contract
Northport Village officials and their blue-collar employees have agreed on a new contract, after 2 1/2 years of negotiating.
The board of trustees voted on Feb. 5 to execute a memorandum of agreement with Local 342. The new contract is retroactive and covers five years — April 1, 2010, to March 31, 2015. The new agreement provides for wage increases: 2 percent as of April 1, 2012, 2.5 percent as of April 1, 2013, and 3 percent as of April 1, 2014, without interest for back pay, according to village documents.
Deputy Mayor Henry Tobin said the contract also created pay steps for village laborers. Effective Jan. 1, starting salary is $18.59 an hour, a decrease from the previous contract. These employees will get increases annually for three years, bringing them to the former contract’s starting salary of $24.11, village officials said.
Tobin said the new contract also has modifications in its health insurance eligibility requirements and contributions. An employee hired after Jan. 1 will not be eligible for health insurance for the first six months of employment. After the six months, employees will be required to make a larger contribution than before. For the first three years, they will pay 20 percent of the cost and then 10 percent after that, according to village documents.
There are about 25 employees in the union.
