On Independence Day, freedom for beagles

Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Port Jefferson said it was part of a group on July 4 that saved 120 beagles from an abandoned pharmaceuticals laboratory in New Jersey.

Save-A- Pet, which worked with two other rescue organizations, Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society and Pets Alive of upstate Middletown, said inhalants were tested on the two- and three-year-old dogs.

Save-A-Pet did not identify the laboratory.

The beagles have been brought to Save-A-Pet, where they will be spayed or neutered and given medical treatment. Save-A-Pet is seeking donations to defray the cost of the medical expenses.
