A new performance arts center is scheduled to open in Westbury in the next several months.

Looking to build an image as a strong arts destination, the village is planning to roll out an extensive slate of arts programming.

Mayor Peter Cavallaro announced he has formed the Greater Westbury Council for the Arts, which had a preliminary meeting earlier this month, to coordinate events at local facilities — such as the Westbury Library, the Historical Society and The Space at Westbury, the new arts center that is opening on Post Avenue.

The mayor mentioned music and film festivals, art exhibits and comedy weekends as types of events he would consider adding.

“With the theater coming on board, there’s going to be a lot more artsy and cultural activities going on,” Cavallaro said. The hope, he said, is to “promote that and develop around it; that will be our center of gravity.”

Residents interested in joining the arts council can email the mayor at mayor@villageofwestbury.org.
