Pet Adoption Day at Riverhead Petco
When Last Chance Animal Rescue Volunteer Cathy Walcott first met Delilah, a 1-year-old terrier/lab mix two weeks ago, the dog's rib cage and spine were showing and she wasn’t house broken.
“She was starving for food and she was starving for affection,” said the East Hampton volunteer.
Walcottt fostered Delilah back to health making Delilah ready for the Last Chance Animal Rescue Adoption Day held Saturday at Petco in Riverhead.
“I have fostered 20 dogs and it has been a wonderful experience for me,” Walcott said. “The dogs give so much love and they love to receive it.”
With 10 dogs available for adoption at the event, Last Chance Director of Adoption Program Barbara Schiano was excited about placing them in permanent and loving homes.
“We save lives. Every dog we have is a rescue,” Schiano said. “Last year, we saved 850 dogs and this year, we saved over one thousand dogs.”
Before being rescued, many of the dogs were strays, abused or given up by their owners because of economic reasons.
Joanne Robinson of Southampton fostered two dogs: Skipper, a pomeranian mix, and Babee, a dachshund/chihuahua mix.
“Skippy was shot by a bb gun, he has little movement in his legs. His legs can become very stiff,” she said. Even with the disability, Robinson admitted the dogs are quite lovable. “These dogs are awesome,” she said.
Schiano said the adoption process is simple. The applicant fills out an adoption application, then Last Chance checks references and often does a home check. The adoption fees are $200 for dogs 7 months and older and $300 for dogs 6 months and younger. The animals are spayed, neutered and vaccinations are up to date.
Last Care Animal Rescue Founder Whitney Knowlton spoke about the importance of adoption.
“Adoption Days are everything. It means everything for people to come out and give these dogs a good home,” she said.
Adoption Day is held Saturdays at Petco locations including Selden, Rocky Point and Riverhead. Those interested in attending should call or check the website for scheduled dates and times. If interested in volunteering to foster an animal or make a donation, call 631-478-6844 or visit www.lcarescue.org.
“The dogs are wonderful. We have had as many as 14 dogs adopted in one day,” Schiano said. “The dogs are rescues and we never want to put them in harm’s way again. They deserve to be in loving homes.”
