'Pirate' raises money for cancer society
Pirates are coming to shore in Greenport this month, but not for their usual looting and raucous antics.
Captain Courage, the leader of the performance troupe Maritime Pirates, and some of his gang will invade the pier at Claudio’s on Saturday nights through Labor Day to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The captain, whose real name is Jamie Davis, said he and his comrades will perform a sword-fighting show at 8 p.m. on the pier and then make appearances at local businesses.
In addition to the entertainment, Davis, of Southold, is selling raffle tickets for $5 each and the winner of the drawing will receive an autographed portrait of Captain Courage, painted by Sag Harbor artist Lynn Matsuoka.
His goal is to sell 500 tickets and donate all of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.
Davis, whose father died from pancreatic cancer 30 years ago, said he’s been involved in raising awareness for years, but his interest has grown since his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago.
His mother, Julie Davis, 81, of Southold, said her son takes pleasure in making others feel more comfortable, and she was touched by his support.
“He is a pleasure to be with,” she said. “He really is caring and he calls in and helps me out when I need it.”
Dawn Heard, the former coordinator for Southold Relay for Life, said Jamie Davis has been a constant fixture at the last three Relay for Life events, walking the survivor lap with his mother and sticking around as Captain Courage to help entertain the kids.
“We are appreciative and always enjoy his enthusiasm at our event,” she said. “He brings games for the kids and stays a long while after the initial lap.”
This is Davis’ first attempt to be more than entertainment for the event and he plans to make his fundraising campaign an annual occurrence, possibly performing and selling tickets outside Claudio’s throughout next summer.
“I get enough notoriety for being a pirate,” he said. “Let me use it for somebody else.”
