Village of Plandome trustees voted Tuesday night to approve the village’s 2013-14 budget.
The $2,737,229 budget represents an increase of 3.19 percent over the previous year’s budget of $2,652,642.

Mayor M. Lloyd Williams said the budget does not exceed the state-mandated cap on the property tax levy increases.

“We think we can get by with what we have,” he said.

The tax rate will rise by 14.52 percent.

“In a way we shoot ourselves in the foot when we all file for lower assessments, because as the assessment goes down, the dollars we need are the same and therefore the tax rate goes up,” Williams said at the meeting.

The village’s assessed valuation dropped by more than 9 percent from the previous year’s budget.

The village’s budget year begins in June.
