Post-Sandy rebuilding expedited, fees waived in Oyster Bay
As Long Islanders continue to put their lives and homes back together more than four months after superstorm Sandy, the Town of Oyster Bay is trying to make the process as quick and painless as possible for its residents, Supervisor John Venditto said in a statement.
Venditto this week reminded residents that the town has waived the standard requirements for homeowners who are restoring their storm-damaged homes to pre-existing conditions.
“Residents who are rebuilding in-kind will be given a letter of authorization, which allows them to begin work immediately,” Venditto said. “Accordingly, no fees will be charged.”
The courtesy will apply to residents wishing to raise their houses, but not those seeking to perform any additional work, including extensions or expansions.
The town’s Department of Planning and Development has also streamlined the process for homeowners requiring any paperwork necessary to restore their homes.
Residents who have damages of more than $10,000 are required to have their plans submitted by a licensed engineer, and those with damages of more than $20,000 are required to have the plans stamped and sealed by a licensed architect. Those who require plumbing and electrical work will need inspection certificates for the repairs, which must be performed by a licensed professionals.
For more information, homeowners should call the Department of Planning and Development at 516-624-6397 or stop by the department’s offices at 74 Audrey Ave. in Oyster Bay. No appointment is necessary.
Refunds for residents who have been charged fees before these rules being announced should send a letter to the town commissioner of Planning and Development.
