Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano and members of the Nassau Legislature are to memorialize Peter J. Schmitt by naming the Massapequa Preserve in his honor on April 27.

Schmitt, an original member of the 16-year-old county legislature and its presiding officer since 2009, died at work of a heart attack on Oct. 3.

The ceremony for the new Peter J. Schmitt Massapequa Preserve is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Merrick Road and Ocean Avenue, the site of the preserve.

Those who plan to attend the ceremony should call Kim Collins at 516-571-4044 or reach her at kcollins@nassaucountyny.gov.
