Public meeting on Superfund project in Garden City
The state Department of Environmental Conservation, in conjunction with the state Department of Health, will present a proposed $731,000 cleanup plan to remove contaminated soil and treat contaminated groundwater from the Award Packaging site in Garden City.
The public meeting will be held Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at Nassau Community College’s College Center Building (Room 252/253) in Garden City.
The 1.8-acre site at 625 South St. is listed on the state’s Superfund list, which means it represents a “significant threat to public health or the environment.” Site-related contaminants include petroleum-related compounds, acetone, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and metals, officials said.
The site was previously used for application of print to plastic packaging material. During this time, wastes were disposed into two exterior dry wells and one interior floor drain. In 2004, contaminated materials were excavated from the dry wells and floor drain, but remediation was incomplete. Groundwater contamination was also detected at the bottom of the excavated dry wells, officials said.
The proposed cleanup remedy is to remove contamination in soil using soil vapor extraction, excavation and off-site disposal, and maintaining a cover system over the site. The remedy also includes air sparging and soil vapor extraction to remove contamination from groundwater, officials said.
Project documents are available to the public at the Garden City Public Library and at the DEC’s regional office in Stony Brook.
Written comments on the DEC plan will be accepted from Friday until March 12. Send comments by mail to Jeffrey Dyber, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-7015, by email to firstname.lastname@example.org, or by calling 518-402-9621.
