Supporters of the shuttered Tackapausha Museum have planned a rally Friday to encourage Nassau County officials to reopen the Seaford facility to the public.

The county-run nature museum was closed completely in December for renovations and its director was laid off, according to an online petition circulated by community group Friends of Tackapausha.

It was scheduled to reopen last month, but its reopening date continues to be put off, the group said.

The petition, called “Nassau County: Save Tackapausha Museum and Preserve,” had more than 260 signatures as of Monday night.

The rally, which is set for noon Friday at the museum, 2225 Washington Ave., is not meant to condemn the county but rather to demonstrate the community’s willingness to help promote and operate the museum, Richard Schary, an advisory board member of Friends of Tackapausha, said Monday.

“We want to work with the county to make sure Tackapausha opens and stays open,” Schary said.

The community, he said, “has lost its museum. A lot of school groups, a lot of Scout groups, have not been able to visit. Children aren’t getting to experience the museum.”

The museum, which was founded in the 1940s and showcased Long Island plants and wildlife, sits on 84 acres of a nature sanctuary and preserve.

Friends of Tackapausha, whose members represent several environmental, civic and economic organizations and whose nonprofit status is pending, said it does not want ownership of the museum and the preserve to be privatized.
