Recycling containers installed in Oyster Bay
There are six new recycling containers around the center of the Oyster Bay hamlet business district so residents and shoppers don’t have to throw their bottles and cans in the trash.
The blue canisters are the work of the nonprofit Oyster Bay Main Street Association.
The organization’s project manager, Meredith Maus, said the containers were installed in mid-June by town public works employees after the association bought them for $6,000 using money from a 2009 state New York Main Street grant.
There are two on Audrey Avenue, two on South Street, one on West Main Street and one on East Main Street.
“That’s it for now,” Maus said. “It’s a pilot program.”
Town public works employees are picking up the bottles and cans once a week at the same time that recycling containers from local businesses are picked up.
“It’s been pretty successful so far,” Maus said, with the containers being filled rapidly.
