Glen Cove City Councilman Reginald A. Spinello is challenging incumbent Mayor Ralph Suozzi in November, the challenger said Tuesday night.

Spinello, 60, a retired businessman who used to run several pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, said he wants to “reduce spending, hold a line on taxes and grow the revenue.”

“I can do a good job,” he said. “I’m a successful, retired businessman.”

Spinello is a member of the Independence Party and also will be running on the Republican and Conservative lines. Challenges to his petitions on the Conservative and Independence lines were not successful and he will not face a primary opponent, the Nassau County Board of Elections confirmed.

Spinello, who was elected to the city council for a two-year term in 2011, has been a frequent critic of the mayor. When he and Republican Anthony Gallo Jr. were sworn in, they became the first non-Democrats on the body in 12 years.

To raise revenue and cut spending, Spinello said he would consider leasing the golf course to a private company for five years or longer and offer retirement incentives to replace older, higher-salaried workers with younger, less expensive ones. He also said he would make greater use of the city Industrial Development Agency’s incentives to convince more businesses to relocate in Glen Cove. IDAs can offer tax subsidies to businesses that relocate or remain in a municipality.

“It’s got to be like a roadshow,” Spinello said. “You’ve actually got to go out and attract business.”

In 2011, Suozzi, a Democrat, edged out Republican Paul Meli by 117 votes.

Suozzi, who was elected mayor in 2005, declined to comment on Spinello’s challenge.

“I’m running for the job that I have worked hard at and done well,” Suozzi said. “I’m going to run on my record.”
