For the third time in six months, the refurbished Suffolk Theater in downtown Riverhead is looking for someone to take charge of operations.

First executive director Bob Spiotto was replaced. Not even his title lasted, and general manager Anna Maria Villa replaced him. She was gone by the end of last month.

Robert Castaldi, who co-owns the theater with his wife, Dianne, said it was a matter of finding someone who could take full advantage of opportunities the rebuilt theater offers.

Because the 800 traditional seats were removed and replaced with platforms, it can operate as a movie house, a dinner theater, or hold business meetings or a wedding. It can even be set up with a dance floor.

“I like to think that me and my wife have built one of the finest race cars on Long Island. We have an excellent pit crew. We need the right driver to drive it. That’s what we need,” Castaldi said.

The theater first opened in 1933. It was closed for 18 years before it was renovated and reopened in March. But, that was too late to book major summer attractions, and the operators had to find their audience.

Castaldi did not discuss how long it would take to fill the job again, saying it was more important to get the right person than to do it quickly. He said the theater was getting help in booking acts for next year, and predicted “ . . . in the summer we’ll get twice the people we did this year.”
