Riverhead to recognize 2 Baiting Hollow roads
It has taken more than 10 years, but the handful of people who live on Northgate Circle and Jill’s Way in Baiting Hollow will soon have their streets placed on Riverhead’s official list of town roads.
The two roads are part of a small Baiting Hollow subdivision, most of which became part of the town highway system as soon as houses along its streets got their certificates of occupancy and the developer filed to bring the streets into the town system.
Northgate Circle and Jill’s Way, like other roads in the subdivision, meet town construction standards. And, like the other roads, they have been regularly maintained, plowed and had potholes filled. But the town discovered this year they were not part of the official map.
Town officials said a problem with the developer led to the two roads being overlooked when the other streets were accepted by the town.
Highway Superintendent George Woodson said the roads had been treated as part of the town system long before he took office. “We’ve been maintaining them at least 10 years or more,” he told the town board at a public hearing last week on a proposal to accept the streets as town roads.
Only town officials spoke, no one opposed the plan, and officials said accepting the streets would have no impact on the town tax rate.
Town board members indicated they were in favor of accepting the streets, and a formal vote is expected at the next town board meeting on Dec. 4.
