Rockville Centre to vote on exceeding tax cap
The Rockville Centre Village Board will hold a special budget meeting Tuesday to vote on whether to exceed the state tax levy cap and whether to approve the proposed $40.8-million budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year beginning June 1.
The proposed budget includes an increase of 5.8 percent in the tax levy. The proposed tax rate is $42.22 per $100 of assessed valuation, a 6.97 percent increase above the current tax rate.
The village board had conducted public hearings on April 3 on a proposed local law to give itself the authority to exceed the tax cap and on the presented tentative budget. Both hearings were closed that same day, but no vote was taken in anticipation of a special budget meeting, village officials said.
Village officials estimate Rockville Centre would obtain revenue of $1.8 million in parks and recreation charges, $1.5 million in fines and forfeitures, $1.2 million from parking permit fees and $1.1 million in on-street parking, among other sources.
Officials project that the general fund will end the current fiscal year with $1.6 million in unreserved fund balance. None of the expected remaining fund balance has been appropriated to the next fiscal year tentative budget, they said.
A copy of the proposed budget is available during regular office hours at the village clerk’s office and online at www.rvcny.us.
Tuesday’s meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Village Hall Court Room on 1 College Place.
