Sachem North dance team wins national title
After eight years and one close call, the Sachem North High School dance team finally has a national championship.
The Varsity Arrowettes competed in the National Dance Alliance Championships at Universal Orlando’s Hard Rock Live, and took home first place in the small varsity jazz category on March 4. The team has been working toward this for the last eight years, when the team started competing nationally.
“I don’t think the staff there had ever seen anyone so excited,” said David Maczkiewicz, 22, the assistant coach for the team. “The girls were literally running in circles, screaming, crying and hugging each other.”
The Arrowettes qualified for the competition at a weeklong dance camp last summer. On the their final day there, the team was told that they would have a bid at the national title.
“A lot of the same dancers were on the team last year when we lost first place by [three-hundreths of a point], so it gave the girls the fire to win this year,” Maczkiewicz said.
Besides bragging rights, the team was given a trophy and leather jackets that say “National Champions,” a goal that head coach Katie Prusinski, 25, said they’ve worked hard for. But she feels former head coach Nicole Magro had everything to do with the team’s current success.
“We sincerely would not be the team we are without her leadership and guidance,” Prusinski. “She was in Florida with us when we won and I could not have imagined it any other way.”
This year marks Prusinski’s eighth year working with the Arrowettes, but her first as their head coach.
“It was such a proud moment,” Prusinski said. “To win as the head coach was amazing, but it really all came down to having such a great group of girls. It was well deserved, they’re just so talented.”
