The Long Island Sigma Pi Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority is hosting a Minority Women in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Career Forum in Wyandanch.

A science, technology, engineering and math career forum for minority women will be held in Wyandanch on Saturday, March 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wyandanch Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp., 295 Merritt Ave.

The forum is being hosted by the Long Island Sigma Pi Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

Black and Hispanic women are underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), said co-coordinator Michelle Richards, and the event is intended to show female students the possibilities in these areas. Among those slated to participate are women in the fields of aeronautics and aviation, civil engineering, chemistry, nursing, nephrology, cardiology and physical therapy, as well women from the U.S. Department of Defense.

“The presenters at this Minority Women in STEM Career Forum are living proof that minority girls and women can overcome societal stereotypes and excel in STEM careers,” Richards said.

Students will have the chance to talk one-on-one with presenters and hear what motivated the women to enter their career fields and the challenges they had to overcome along the way. The career forum is free and open to students in elementary, middle and high school.
