Sessions planned on $4.5 million Syosset firehouse expansion
The Syosset Fire District has planned a $4.5 million expansion of one of its firehouses, saying its force has outgrown the space at 205 S. Oyster Bay Rd., and it is inviting residents to attend one of three public information sessions about the renovation.
“We want to be upfront and honest with the taxpayers,” Giovanni Graceffa, chairman of the district’s board of commissioners, said Tuesday. District officials are hosting three informational meetings at their headquarters at 50 Cold Spring Rd., which can accommodate more people than the firehouse being renovated. The first session is Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The district is to extend the building’s north side by 13 feet and expand the second floor to cover the entirety of the first floor, Graceffa said.
The changes are in part to provide more sleeping and showering space for firefighters and EMTs, especially when they’re preparing for potential emergencies such as a hurricane, Graceffa said.
The construction funds will come out of the district’s reserves, he said. Bids have gone out, and construction is expected to begin in early June and last about a year and a half, he said.
The South Oyster Bay Road building, one of the district’s three firehouses, is to remain active during construction, with no foreseeable impact on response times, Graceffa said.
The other two information sessions are to be held at the headquarters Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, and Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
