Smithtown band concerts will feature film music
Music by Hollywood composer John Williams — the man behind the “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter” scores and the foreboding theme from “Jaws” — will be featured in the Smithtown Community Band’s summer concert series.
Each of the orchestra’s four weekly shows will include Williams’ compositions for films such as “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Jurassic Park” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” And, in a nod to the upcoming London Olympic Games, the group will play Williams’ theme for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
The first show is at 8 tonight at the Smithtown Historical Society’s Frank Brush Barn, 211 E. Main St. The other shows are scheduled for July 17, 24 and 31. Admission is free.
The band’s conductor, William Link, said he has been a fan of Williams’ work since he saw “Jaws” in 1975.
In addition to Williams’ music, the band plans to play marches, a medley of Beatles songs, music from “Grease,” classical works by Mozart and Rimsky-Korsakov — and Katy Perry’s hit, “Firework.”
“We try to mix it up so that there’s something for every age group,” Link said.
