Though less famous than its Spanish counterpart, Smithtown’s annual running of the bull has at least one advantage: it’s much safer.

Unlike Pamplona’s daredevil dash with live bovines, the only bull in Smithtown is the bronze statue at state routes 25 and 25A.

The Smithtown charity run, now in its seventh year, will be held Saturday at the Smithtown Central School District offices, 26 New York Ave.

A 1-kilometer walk steps off at 8:45 a.m., and a 5-kilometer run starts at 9 a.m. Registration, which begins at 8 a.m., is $20 for the run and $10 for the walk.

Proceeds will benefit Angela’s House, which helps families with medically frail children, and the Courtney Sipes Memorial Foundation, which advocates pedestrian safety and supports students interested in music and art. Courtney, 11, died in November 2009 when she was struck by a vehicle on Main Street in Smithtown.

For applications, call the Greater Smithtown Chamber of Commerce at 631-979-8069 or go to its website, smithtownchamber.com. The run is sponsored by the chamber and Damianos Realty Group.
