Smithtown seeks to honor youth volunteers
The Town of Smithtown’s Youth Bureau last year recognized 450 students for their community service projects.
This year the agency hopes to reward even more students.
The bureau, and the town’s Youth Advisory Board, will honor local students’ community service projects during a ceremony April 21 in conjunction with Global Youth Service Day — a worldwide event sponsored by Youth Service America.
The bureau is accepting applications through April 12.
Applications ask students to describe their projects and the effect they had on the community. The forms can be obtained from the youth bureau, 124 West Main St. in Smithtown, or by going to its website, smithtowninfo.com/youthbureau, and clicking on “Announcements.”
Students will receive certificates honoring their work. The program, in its third year, is open to all — from preschoolers to college students.
Past honored projects include an antibullying video, bottles collected to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, and shoes donated to Haitian earthquake victims.
For information, call the youth bureau at 631-360-7595.
